How To Apply Mascara

  1. Hold the mascara wand in a vertical position while applying.
  2. Wiggle the brush right into the roots of the lashes for a lush look and increase volume.
  3. Always sweep the lashes outwards; not straight out ans concentrate on the outer corners.
  4. Leaving the low lashes bare can create a lovely fresh wide-eyed look.

3 Suggestions for Getting The Most Out of Your Pictures

Suggestion #1 - Head Shot Tips

Head shots are usually one of the first and most basic pictures that a model must have in her portfolio. While you might think this should be a stiff formal picture, just the opposite is true. It should be a relaxed and comfortable shot that features you in middle colors, nothing to drab but nothing flashy either. When you go in for your head shot photo session, wear very little jewelry as you do not want to detract from the beauty of your facial features.

Suggestion #2 - Learning How to Pose for Model Photos

Look through magazines to find poses you think would work for you, then practice them in the mirror. Have a friend take modeling pictures of you in the various poses so that you can see how they look (not to be used in your portfolio) and make adjustments to your poses.

Suggestion #3 - Look the Part of a Modeling Professional in Your Pictures

Great posture is a must in modeling and not something that comes natural to anyone, no matter how beautiful the woman or girl is. So, make sure those shoulders are up and the back is straight.

When you're taking a picture in a sitting pose, make sure that you have your weight shifted to one leg to give the look the right angles. Another tip is to suck in your stomach, no matter how thin you already are. Don't hold your breath while the shot is being taken as it's sure to show in the pictures.

...Tips For Runway Models...

1. Get shoes

Make sure your shoes fit well and are comfortable for walking. At first you might even use masking tape to prevent slipping when you do your runway model walk.

2. First walk rule for models

When you begin, make sure and land on the balls of your feet – not your heels – stay balanced

3. Arms and the female model walk

Your arms should be kept close to your body and let them swing naturally from side to side going from front to back, this forces your hips to move as you are walking giving you that female high fashion model look.

4. Body posture

Remember the old book on the head routine? Well, it’s true! Your posture needs to be very good for a complete modeling walk. Keep your back straight with your rump tight.

Shoulders should be back and your chest should be out. Think in very long lines – this makes you look taller and confident when you are walking the runway (or even a sidewalk for an editorial photo shoot). Keep your head straight (but not too high) with your chin slightly out. Now you’ve got the look!

5. Practice – Practice – Practice!

I can’t emphasize this enough. Nothing works unless you do. As a beginner, start by walking casually up and down a hallway. Be sure and use the tips for the model walk written.

Tip: When doing a female fashion runway walk – make sure your head is the last thing that moves when you are ready to make the end of the catwalk turn. You’ve seen the high fashion models do this pretty much every time but you need to consciously make yourself do them at first. Then they will become more and more natural as you practice walking.

Once you have these moves to the point of using them without thinking, you are one step closer to becoming a professional female model. Now, get out the shoes, go back over this tutorial, and learn the runway model walk so you’ll be ahead of the pack when job opportunities arise. Good luck

Posing Tips

A major factor in becoming a success in the modeling industry is by learning to pose properly. If you happen to be one of the few lucky women who has the instinct to pose naturally that's great, but if not, read the 5 suggestions below and practice, practice, practice.

1. Practice Different Fashion Poses before Going to Photo Shoots

When you become a high fashion model, you may be offered a job modeling the latest in clothing, shoes, hats and other wardrobe accessories from top designers.

Be prepared for this job offer by practicing poses in front of a full length mirror with clothing, props and other products that you see advertised in high fashion magazines and on TV shows.

2. Focus on Body Posture

Always keep good body posture when posing for photo shoots unless instructed otherwise by your photographer. To give your abdomen a more toned appearance, hold your stomach in.

Position your hands where they will fall naturally and keep your fingers slightly apart. Practice different ways of positioning your hands and tilting your head.

3. Practice Facial Expressions

Stay relaxed and pay close attention when giving different facial expressions. When posing, your expressions should be spontaneous.

Make your poses come alive by practicing how to give the "look." Learn this by closing your eyes, imagining a thought, opening your eyes and selling the thought.

4. Do Test Photo Shoots with Professional Female Fashion Model Photographers

Test shooting or Time for Prints (TFP) can be very helpful for your future career.

You not only get professional pictures for your model portfolio, but you also get practice in posing and making expressions in front of the camera.

Choosing a Girl Photographer for Your Fashion Shoot

If you decide to try the test shoot, choose a reputable female fashion photographer that you feel comfortable with. Remember, it is very important to keep your portfolio updated and this is a great way to do this without spending a fortune. Just make sure the photographer shoots the pictures you need which include:

Black and White Headshot
Business Shot
Strong Fashion Pic
Casual Shot
Bikini or Lingerie Photo
Artistic Picture

5. Show Self Confidence with Your Posing Skills

Did you know that beauty is not the only talent clothing designers look for in fashion models? They want a model that shows self confidence in themselves, because the confidence will also show in the clothing or product the model is presenting. Your self assurance will shine through when you are posing for the camera so keep practicing by visiting photographers until you feel very comfortable under the strobe lights of the studio.

Build your self-confidence by studying and practicing. Learn to say "Oh Well, There Will Be Another Chance" when you are turned down. One day the self confidence you have obtained will be the major factor in making your dream come true.

Now, strut your stuff and show the fashion designers just what you have to offer them with your new found female fashion model posing techniques.
